It’s a lovely summer evening in Savonlinna in 1903. Ship designer Eemil Kiiveri has been considering for a long time the latest and difficult ship order. The requirement was for ship with enough room to transport, if necessary, all the inhabitants of a co-operative society to church and to the market. Moreover, it was expected to run with little energy and be able to get to quite difficult places, shallow waters and (when necessary) pass through ice. The engine had been already designed. The hull would be made of 7.5 mm thick Siemens black steel. ´It is the easiest to make a hull out of and it is in class of its own as regards strength, cut to the desired form and assembled by riveting,´ Eemil thought to himself. The hull needs to have length and roundness to it so as to assure smooth sailing. The salons would be arranged in three tiers so that the country bumpkins and the town gentry would not run into one another on board the ship. A sun deck would provide that certain dignity when stepping out in fine weather. Building the ship could begin perhaps this summer...
